Project History:
The Woodlawn
Community Foundation was formed to assist with this project and has
been instrumental in our efforts. The
Foundation has pledged to continue with
many additional Community projects in the future. The Foundation
is a 501(c)(3) organization.
The property has been readied for the project
with the help of the IPRB (Illinois Petroleum Resources
Board) and KSG Asphalt for the site remediation work
and the hundreds of hours of donated
time and resources from the many volunteers.
The Village of
Woodlawn
has been instrumental in the development of the project, securing funding
for the purchase of the property, the entrance road and parking area and
much more! In addition, the Village has pledged its continuing support for the project in a joint
venture with the Chapman Sports
Complex Board of Directors.
Many organizations, businesses,
and individuals have donated time, equipment, and resources to this project
and continue to do so. They have currently donated over $750,000.00 and
are making this project possible. Because of their generosity, Phase I
of the project has been completed and much of Phase II is also now completed.
Thousands of hours have been devoted to the project with project planning,
legal and political matters, technical issues, writing grants, etc., heavy
construction, concession facility construction, professional skilled labor,
grounds preparation, erecting fencing, laying water and sewer lines, building
the three infields, and so much more. Now all of this has transformed
the landscape West of the Grade School in the Heart of our Community into
a Sports Complex we can all be proud of. Children and their families will
enjoy this facility for many - many years to come and we should all be
very proud of what we have accomplished. We set out with a goal and refused
to accept anything but success and we now have our reward.
Project Future:
The Fields were ready for practice and day
games by the Spring of 2004 as scheduled.
The Safety Canopy, Lights, Additional Fencing, and Bleachers will be installed
as funding becomes available.
Other future plans for the Complex include
a Walking Track, Batting Cages, Playground Equipment, and early plans
for perhaps Soccer Fields and even Tennis Courts are being considered,
plus so much more!
A Sincere Thank You to all of the Volunteers!
We thank all of the Volunteers (too numerous
to mention) for all of the hard work and devotion to our Children and
our Community and for all of those who have supported and continue to
support the Fundraisers to help us in our quest for a brighter future
for the Children we love so much.
You may click here to view a list of the names of many of our volunteers though there have been so many who have helped that this list cannot possibly show every name although with your help, perhaps we can make sure that it does. Please let us know if there are names that we have over looked.
